Wilmington, DE, May 23, 2017 – The South Asian Bar Association of Delaware (SABA-DE) will host Paul Singh Grewal, Vice President and Deputy General Counsel for Litigation at Facebook, on Wednesday, June 7, as part of SABA-DE’s 10th Anniversary Celebration.
Mr. Grewal oversees global litigation for Facebook, handling a variety of complex legal and policy matters for the pioneering social media platform with nearly 2 billion users. He joined the company last year after more than five years on the federal bench as a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of California, where he presided over high-stakes, high-profile patent and other cases and earned a reputation as a thoughtful and knowledgeable jurist. He is a former President of the South Asian Bar Association of North America, the umbrella organization for SABA chapters across the continent.
“Having someone of Paul’s accomplishment and stature speak on issues that are significant both locally and globally is an exciting ingredient in the celebration of this milestone anniversary,” said Santosh Coutinho, Co-President of SABA-DE. “This is an excellent opportunity for the Delaware community to hear from a renowned attorney with an incredibly important role at a company whose product is used by so many. It also fits with our mission to provide a forum for learning and professional growth.”
Mr. Grewal is the latest in a long line of high-profile speakers hosted by SABA-DE over the last decade. They include U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Sri Srinivasan; Fmr. Acting U.S. Solicitor General Neal Katyal, currently lead attorney for the State of Hawaii in its challenge of the President’s latest travel ban; Fmr. U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara; SCOTUS practitioners Kannon Shanmugam, Pratik Shah and Tejinder Singh who have collectively argued more than 35 cases in the U.S. Supreme Court; and authors Saira Rao and Deepa Iyer. In addition to its “An Evening With…” Speaker Series, SABA-DE has been recognized for its timely programming tackling current events such as the market meltdown and human trafficking.
Before his appointment to the bench in 2010, Mr. Grewal was an intellectual property litigation partner at Day Casebeer LLP (which later merged with Howrey LLP), where he served on the firm’s management committee. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Grewal also served as a law clerk to Federal Circuit Judge Arthur J. Gajarsa and U.S. District Judge Sam H. Bell. He is a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The June 7 event will be held at the Wilmington Club starting at 5:30 p.m. with a networking reception followed by remarks by Grewal and others starting at 7 p.m. A diverse cross-section of lawyers, judges, community leaders and elected officials are expected to attend. Due to the generous support of more than a dozen sponsors, there is no cost for guests to attend the event. However, pre-registration is required due to limited seating.
