South Asian Bar Association of Delaware Announces New Board

Wilmington, Delaware, July 15, 2010 –The South Asian Bar Association of Delaware (“SABA DE”) announced its new Board of Directors, including Anne Gwal, Assistant General Counsel at Pepco Holdings (the parent of Delmarva Power), as the new President of the organization. The other Board members include: Sanjay Bhatnagar, Cole Schotz; Sophie Siddiqui, Fox Rothschild; Mona Parikh, Buchanan Ingersoll; Rakesh Mehta, Potter Anderson & Corroon; Nishat Hasan, McCarter & English; Harshal Purohit, New Castle County Law Department; and Ayesha Chacko, Campbell & Levine.

After serving as the founding President of SABA-DE for the least three years, Emilie Ninan, a partner of Ballard Spahr LLP will move to the role of Special Advisor to SABA-DE and will join the Executive Committee for the North American South Asian Bar Association (NASABA), the national organization of which SABA-DE is a chapter member.

“I’m proud of what SABA-DE has accomplished but even more excited to see what SABA-DE will do in the future” said Ninan.

Since its inaugural event in June 2007 which featured Neal Katyal (now Acting Solicitor General of the United States), SABA-DE has been actively supporting its members and the larger community with mentoring programs, fund raisers, sponsorship of diversity pipeline projects, programs on substantive topics of interest such as the market meltdown and joint events with other bar organizations.

Up next for SABA-DE is hosting the NASABA Leadership Retreat the first weekend in October. The Leadership Retreat brings together NASABA’s Board, Advisory Committee, Section and Committee Chairs and Chapter Presidents from across North America for a weekend of working meetings and networking opportunities. NASABA’s leadership is comprised of attorneys who practice in all fields of law, including partners in national firms, in-house counsel, members of the judiciary and academicians. “This is an amazing opportunity for the Delaware legal community to showcase what Delaware has to offer to a national audience,” Gwal said.

The Leadership Retreat Welcome Reception on Friday, October 1 will be hosted by Potter Anderson & Corroon. The Board meeting the next day will be held at the offices of Richards Layton & Finger and the closing dinner will take place that evening at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art. Sponsorship opportunities are still available.
