In the wake of the Oak Creek shooting on Aug. 5th that killed six worshipers at a Sikh gurdwara, a US Congressional hearing on hate crimes was held on September 19, 2012 at Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C. Senator Dick Durbin, Chairman of the Senate subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights, conducted the hearing. On August 21, a diverse group of more than 150 organizations (including SABA-DE), led by the Sikh Coalition, had requested a Senate hearing on hate crimes and domestic extremism.
